Shown above is a specimen of high grade ore containing gold in quartz. This specimen is from the collection of Herb Way. Herb was a mining engineer spending his life working for a variety of companies (Pacific Tin, Yuba Mining Co., Hannah Mining Co.) in support of their large scale dredging and exploration efforts. Although I have no specific information on the locale from which Herb collected this specimen, I would guess it came from a Nevada location. The gold shows as fine eye-visible particles located in the lower right hand portion of this specimen. The quartz also contains larger inclusions of grayish-silver pyrites. This specimen is a good example for those novices who have difficulty distinguishing native gold from pyrite. Close-up images of the free gold can by seen by clicking this link. ( #M509, $45.00)
