Hessonite Garnet from Asbestos, Quebec Garnet No. 769 Curved Triangular Brilliant Cut, SI2, 1.81 ct., 8.0 x 8.0 x 4.7 mm, $90.50 faceted by R. Drummond Garnets comprise a family of minerals with a variety of chemical compositions that result in a wide array of natural colors. Shown above is a hessonite garnet of an unusual light peachy-color. An old asbestos mine in Quebec, Canada, has long produced beautiful clusters of golden-colored hessonite garnet crystals. These clusters make outstanding mineral specimens. Although most hessonite garnet is heavily included, some is sufficiently clean to be faceted into attractive gemstones. Shown above is a very bright little hessonite garnet cut in a curved triangular shape. The craftsmanship of this stone is fine. This little gem would look great in a ring, pendant, or pin. Something a Canadian (or any collector) would be proud to display. |
Spessartite Garnet No. 680, Square Brilliant Cut, SI1, 1.74 ct., 6.4 x 6.4 x 4.9 mm, faceted by R. Drummond, $156.60 Sold At the recent Flagg Show held in Phoenix, AZ, I came across a parcel of "old collection" spessartite garnets that were being sold by the local club sponsoring the event. Having pawed through boxes of spessartite garnet crystals from the Little Three Mine near Ramona, California, looking for facet grade material, I am fairly confident that the rough crystal used to cut the above gemstone was also from one of the Ramona mines. Although the origin of this gem rough is disputable, the beauty of this garnet is not. Spessartite garnet has a deep golden orange color. The square brillaint cut is simple, but it yields excellent scintillation across the entire crown of the stone. This expertly crafted gem would look beautiful in a small pendant, pin, or ring. |
