Iolite from Australia
Iolite No. 755, Meridian Cut, VVS, 2.57 ct., 10.5 x 5.8 x 6.7 mm, faceted by: R. Drummond, $128.50 Sold
Iolite, also know as cordierite or water sapphire, is a magnesium aluminum silicate that occurs in various hues of blue. The hardness of iolite is 7 to 7.5; making it sufficiently hard to be used in faceted form in jewelry. Iolite is unusual in that its color varies from a light gray to a deep blue; dependent upon which crystallographic axis is viewed. When properly oriented and faceted, iolite makes a gorgeous blue gemstone. The above gem is expertly faceted. The facet junctions (meet points), symmetry, and polish are all fine. The clarity of this gem is excellent. There are no eye-visible inclusions. This gemstone would look beautiful in pendant, pin, or special occasion ring.
