The Shuttle Cut gets its name from the fact that it is shaped like a shuttle used in weaving. The above stone is pointed on both ends and the crown is traversed by a series of step facets that are perpendicular to the long axis. Some would call the above stone citrine, but that term should only be applied to quartz that is truly a pure yellow color. This well crafted gem would make an unusual centerpiece in a pendant, pin, or ring.

Rutilated Smoky Quartz

The Fan Cut gets its name from the fact that it is shaped like two fans, one rotated 90 degrees to the other. It is difficult to visualize this gemstone. Imagine two axe heads, joined and rotated until they are perpendicular to each other. The above images show different views of the same gemstone. This gem is cut from Brazilian smoky quartz that contains many fine strands of rutile. The Fan Cut can be prong set in either a ring or pendant.
