Sunstone from Lakeview (Plush), Oregon No. 494: Brilliant Rectangle Cut, 2.39 ct., 8.4 x 7.5 x 6.6 mm, SI1, $155.35 Sold Sunstone (feldspar) from this gem field comes in a variety of colors. Most common is a light straw-yellow color. Most highly prized is the deeply saturated reddish-orange sunstone (Hence the name "Sunstone). The reddish color is a result of trace amounts of copper. When the copper is present as tiny platelets, light can reflect from the surface of the platelets and cause an iridescence termed "Schiller." This gem has several layers of Schiller that are nearly perpendicular to the table. The photograph of this stone was taken with illumination configured to show the light reflecting off the irridescent platelets. The body color of this gem is beautiful, and the Schiller adds an additonal mark of distinction (Do you think Cindy Crawford looks better with, or without, that "Beauty Mark"?). This gemstone would work well as the centerpiece of a pendant or occasional-use ring. |
Sunstone from Lakeview (Plush), Oregon No. 496: Cardinal Lozenge Cut, 4.58 ct., 16.4 x 9.6 x 8.0 mm, SI2, faceted by R. This gem has multiple layers of Schiller that are horizontal to the table. As viewed in the above image, the Schiller gives the gem a "sleepy" appearance. When oberved "in person," the Schiller shows a golden-bronze glow as light reflects off the microscopic copper platelets. This gemstone would look beautiful as the centerpiece of a pendant or occasional-use ring. |

Sunstone from The Democratic Republic of the Congo No. 911X: Trilliant Cut, 1.39 ct., 7.9 x 7.9 x 4.8 mm, VS, facetor unknown, $417.00 Sold I first saw faceted sunstone reported to be from the Congo at a gem and mineral show in Asheville, N.C., in 2004. I was greatly impressed by the color-saturation and outstanding clarity of the gems. All of the Congo sunstones were of a deep reddish-orange color, a more deeply saturated color than normally seen in the sunstone from Oregon. Finally, at the 2005 Tucson show, I met Laurent Sikirdji, the discoverer and distributor of the andesine sunstone from the Congo. The above gem was obtained from Mr. Sikirdji. To date, only a small amount of andesine sunstone has been produced from this Congo deposit. Mr. Sikirdji reports that little more is to be had. Whatever the case, the above sunstone is of exceptional color and clarity. This gem would look exquisite in a pendant, pin, or special occasion ring. |
