Shown here is a good example of Four Peaks, Arizona, amethyst gem rough displaying the exceptional reddish-purple gem material that occurs in distinct zones within the ugly hematite-encrusted crystal points. This particular variant of pruple is often referred to as "Siberian" amethyst. Careful selection of facetable material and proper orientation of the rough before cutting yields exquisite gems suitable for use in fine jewelry. It should be noted that because of the marked color zoning and inclusions in Four Peaks Amethyst crystals, it is difficult to obtain large (above 5 carats finished weight) gemstones from this amethyst rough.
