Amethyst and Smoky Scepter Quartz Crystals from Petersen Peak, NV

ptrnpka2

Shown here are typical examples of an amethyst crystal and a smoky quartz scepter crystal from Petersen Peak, Nevada/California. These specimens were removed from a pocket in a quartz vein and have not suffered the abrasion typically seen on "floater" crystals found loose in the soil. Scepter crystals result from a second phase of crystal growth on a previously formed quartz crystal "stalk." The terminal quartz is often a beautiful amethyst color. Petersen Peak, approximately 40 miles northwest of Reno, Nevada, is famous for large amethyst scepter crystals. Exceptional specimens reach 12 to 18 inches in overall length. The gem deposit is covered by a large number of gemstone claims. Some claims are open to collectors through club-sponsored field trips or on a fee basis. Mountain Lily Gems specializes in faceted amethyst gemstones cut from Petersen Peak.quartz crystals.
