The Brushy Mountain, a.k.a. Mule Creek, quartz crystal area is located on the Arizona-New Mexico border in Grant County, New Mexico. The quartz crystals formed in cavities in a rhyolite or andesite rock. Most of the crystals are small (1-8 cm on average), and rather heavily included, but they are typically a light amethystine color and display unusual crystal shapes. Many of the crystals are scepters with skeletal habit. The above specimens is a wall section of a vug that was lined with gorgeous little scepter crystals, some with reverse scepters on top. Three of the smaller crystals on this specimen (not the two largest scepter crystals) became detached during the collecting process. They were reattached with cyanoacrylate adhesive in their original position. Please refer to my YouTube video on collecting at this mineral locale, and consult this web page for a discussion of how this and other Brushy Mt. specimens were prepared for display. This is one of the finest specimens that I have collected from the Brushy Mt. locale. (#m497 is valued at $125.00)
