Yogo Gulch, Montana, sapphires set the world standard for natural, unenhanced, color. As they come from the ground these sapphire crystals are typically a gorgeous cornflower blue. Additionally, the majority of the crystals are of remarkable clarity. Most contain few inclusions and are perfect for gem cutting. The one drawback with Yogo sapphires, besides their scarcity, is that they tend to be small, and of tabular shape. Very few crystals will finish a stone of 0.5 to 1.0 carats in size. Shown abobe are two views of a nice large Yogo sapphire just as it came from the ground. It has the typical cornflower blue color of most Yogos, and it displays the typical tabular shape. This crystal is heavily included (multiple separation planes) and thus escaped the gem cutter's lap. Portions of the crystal surface are still coated with a thin layer of some unidentified mineral (black spinel coating?). The crystal weights 3.3 carats and is a nice large example of a rough Yogo sapphire. It would make a fine additon to any mineral collection. (#M500, $85.00 Sold) |
