Potrillo Maar Olivine Locale, South Central New Mexico |
A rare olivine nodule from Potrillo Maar containing near gemmy fragments of peridot |
Potrillo Maar is another geologic feature similar to that of Kilbourne Hole. This maar, also formed by an explosive volcanic event, spans the US-Mexico border about 25 miles west of El Paso,Texas. Scouring the area of the maar, a collector can find olivine nodules exactly like those at Kilbourne Hole. Occasionally, and that is very very very occasionally, one of those nodules will contain a tiny fragment of olivine large enough for faceting. The image to the left was taken standing almost exactly on the US/Mexico border looking north. The Potrillo Mountains are in the distance. The Potrillo Maar is in the foreground and extends to, and consists of, the whitish ash talus slopes overlain by a bassalt cap. Olivine nodules can be found loose in this area or still included in the basalt flow. |
